Theodorick Carter

(Abt 1669 - 1737)

Y-DNA of descendants suggests that either Theodorick, or Giles Jr., was not a son of Giles Carter Sr. Since there is no other son to test descendants - there is no sure way to tell which of the two was perhaps a stepson.

One wonders why so few of his children were mentioned in his will. Children are believed to be:
Children of Theodorick Carter and Elizabeth are:
i. Hannah Carter, born in Henrico County, Virginia; married John Webb Bef. 1715 in probably Virginia. [There is major confusion - a St. Peter's Parish record shows that a John Webb married a Mary Martin there, 12 Feb 1712. Some solve this problem by saying Hannah Carter was a second wife. But perhaps there was another John Webb?]
ii. Theodorick Carter, born 1697 in Henrico County, Virginia; died 1777 in Prince Edward County, Virginia; married (1) Anne Waddill in probably Virginia; married (2) Judith Cunningham in probably Virginia. [Note the Theodorick who married Judith Cunningham was a SON of Theodorick, b. 1697.]
iii. Elizabeth Carter, born 1699 in Henrico County, Virginia; married Martin.
iv. Anne Carter, born 1702 in Henrico County, Virginia; married Farris in probably Virginia.
v. Susannah Carter, born 1704 in Henrico County, Virginia; married Scruggs.
vi. Martha Carter, born 1706 in Henrico County, Virginia; married Gaithright in probably Virginia.
vii. Mary Carter, born 1710 in Henrico County, Virginia; died 1803 in Cumberland County, Virginia; married Drury Scruggs Abt. 1745 in Cumberland County, Virginia.
viii. John Carter, born 1712 in Henrico County, Virginia; married Elizabeth.

Elizabeth is seen with various surnames to include Wade, Webb, and Randolph.
One of the reasons I believe she's thought to be a Webb is the following:

WILL OF JOHN WEB
Will of John Web of Henrico Co. Sick and Weak. D. 27 April 1736. P. 1st Monday in July 1736. To sons Jno. and Jas. Web each a half of the land. Residue of est. to be div. betw. sons Geils, Theodrick, Henery, Jacob and Cudbord Web. Exor. son Jno.; Signed John Webb. Wit: James Cole, Theoderick Carter, Thos. Carter, John Carter.
Inv. of est. of John Webb dec'd. Totals L 19.11.3 Signed Jno. Cocke, Jno. Hales, Thos. Bethell. Presented by Giles Carter

1st Monday in august 1736 and Recorded.  And 6 years later...  1742 Dec - On petition of Theodorick Webb, Beverley Randolph is to receive from Giles Carter Sr.
all of the estate left by will of John Webb, dec'd, and deliver to the petitioner p 151 4  Henrico Co.
I'm assuming this Giles Carter, Sr. was the Giles Carter married to Mary Povall.

Laters records of George and Lewis Webb would not seem to be helpful.

Some suggest that the above John Webb, father of the baptized children was married to Sarah Cocke.
John Weeb [Webb] will, dated 6 Jul 1725, recorded 6 Jun 1726. Son John, grandson William [no surname given?]. Wit: Theodorick Carter, Elizabeth Carter
Daughter Jane Webb died young. Does anyone know what happened to the other two daughters; Elizabeth and Mary? There has been speculation that his daughter Elizabeth was the wife of Theodorick Carter but that seems unlikely as that would indicate that her daughter married her uncle. It is unusual for an uncle and niece to marry. My note: I don't believe ANY of these supposed relationships are proved... but Elizabeth Carter's will of 1747 names a grandson as Cuthbert Webb, so there is a Carter/Webb connection.
Another abstract of Webb's will says that he gave a heifer to William Webb, grandson, certain items to wife, not named, and all the remainder to son John.
