Fleming Jones

(1816 - 1889)

Married Mary E. Funk, daughter of James Funk. Fleming is buried Liberty Cemetery. They first appear in Dade Co in the 1860 Census, but all their children are shown as born in Missiouri, even the oldest daughter, age 16. There is a note on Paul Barker's FGS of this family that Fleming & Mary were married 19 Jun 1848 in Lawrence Co MO. Perhaps this is where the missing members of the family can be found in 1850.

Fleming & Polly were found in Lawrence Co 1850 census, but no other missing family members seem to be there; p.309b, Dwelling 575.
"Fleman" Jones, age 36, born in KY; Polly age 25, b. TN. Frances [female] age 6, William age 5, Rebecca age 2, Martha age 7, William age 3, Sarah age 7/12.
All the children were born in MO. One could think perhaps some nieces & nephews lived with them. Strange there are two Williams. Only Martha, Rebecca, and one William appear with the family in 1860 and some of their ages will change. I think it likely Fleming had an earlier marriage and at least the first three, maybe the first four children were by the first wife.

1860 Dade Co MO Census, Polk Twp, p.44, Dwelling 292, 2 households from his brother Charles. Flemin Jones age 45 b. KY, Mary age 34 b. TN, Martha 16, Rebecca A. 11, Thomas J. 8, Martin 6, James 4, Sarah 3, Ellen 11/12, and William age 12 listed after the others.

1870 Dade Co Census, Polk Twp, p.81a, Dwelling 34. Fleming Jones age 43, Farmer, b. KY; Mary age 45. Martha J. 23; Wm. C. age 21, Thomas 18, Martin 16, James 15, Sarah 13, Ellen 12, John 9, Richard 8, and Eliza 2.

1880 Dade Co MO Census, Polk Twp, p.199c Fleming Jones, age 62 [65?]; Polly age 53 [says b. Illinois as were her parents; her birthplace was TN in 1860]. Martin 26, James 24, Ellen 20, John 19, Richard 17, and Liza 12, are all still living at home.

Buried Liberty Cemetery.
