David Brown

(Abt 1727 - )

David's death as recorded in a DAR record as 1778 is incorrect as there are records of his as late as 1791 in Pendleton District SC. He married Isabella McClintock, born abt 1730 in Scotland. It's unknown where they married.

A John McClintock [likely her father or brother received a 640 acre Granville grant on Reedy Fork in 1753. On 14 Apr 1758, John McClintock and wife Isabel sold this 640 acres to Robert Erwine. Rowan Co DB 2, p.323.

David's son William stated in his Revolutionary pension application that he was born in Guilford Co NC [Rowan at the time] in 1752 and entered military service in Pendleton SC in 1775 or 1776.

Grants to David in SC include 50 acres survey by Jno Hamilton on 7 May 1765. It was on 12 Mile Creek, a branch of the Saluda River. The tract was near Broadmouth Creek and was probably where David was still living in 1789. [This makes no sense - 12 Mile emptied into the Keowee; the Broadmouth into the Saluda.]
Warrant of 2 Sep 1767 was for 200 acres of Bounty land on the Broad River near the Saluda. [The Broad divides Union Co from Chester & Fairfield Counties]
Another pat on the Bounty of 150 A in Craven Co which would later be Chester Co.
Another 200 acres in Craven on North side of Broad River
Then in 1787 David Brown obtained a grant for 100 acres on Mayes Creek, a branch of Fairforrest adjacent his original grant.
[It isn't at all clear if these are all the same man; however a pension application for son-in-law Thomas Armstrong states that he married David's daughter in York District. Won William also deposed that he lived in Pendleton when he enlisted but York Co when he entered the service the last time. So apparently David Brown did live in more than one location.

Anderson Co Deeds:
DB B, p.65 25 Oct 1791 David Brown bought 404 acres from Robert Craves on Crow Creek a branch of the Keowee River. David Jr witnessed.
David Brown and wife Elizabeth sold this 404 acres to David Nolin on 25 Jun 1798. [No comment in the Brown book about this wife "Elizabeth". Either the wrong David Brown or David married a second time. He would have been about 70 years old in 1798 and his son David had died the previous year.

Rugeley also states that the land on the Keowee was near his sons Samuel and James & son-in-law Thomas Armstrong.

Children of David & Isabella:
William
Isabella who married John or William Pressley
David whose wife was Jane/Jean - his will in Anderson Co dated 7 Jun 1796. Brother Joseph to be exec.; sons John & Joseph, daughters Elizabeth & Jean; will proved 26 Jun 1797
Mary "Molly" who married Capt Thomas Armstrong
a daughter
?Nancy
James who married Elizabeth Reed
Joseph whose wife's surname was Hood
Samuel whose wife was Katherine, surname possibly Wilson or Alexander.

When I first discovered that David & Isabella Brown had a son Samuel born in the 1770's, I was hopeful this was "my" Samuel Brown. He is of the same age, but he is not the same man. Samuel, son of David & Isabella, died between 1814 and 1827 in Bedford Co TN.

Here are some records of this Samuel: Grant in 96 District North of the Saluda to Samuel Brown, John Rotten, John McClintock 1784-5, 1788, 1793-4

19 Nov 1796, David and his wife Jane deeded 111 acres of a tract adjacent and between James & Samuel Brown to Thomas Armstrong, husband of their sister Mary. Part of 558 acres granted Thomas Holden on 1 Jan 1787 and part conveyed to John Rotten on 12 Jun 1789 and from Rotten to David Brown 1794. Samuel & Joseph Brown witnessed. Samuel proved 27 Jan 1797. Rec. Mar 1800.

Anderson Co DB C, p.405 19 Nov 1796 David Brown & Jane sold Samuel Brown 111 acres on the North side of the Tugaloo bounded by Thomas Armstrong. Part of 558 acres granted Thomas Holder on 1 Jan 1787 and conveyed in part to John Rotton on 12 Jun 1789 and from Rotten to Brown, 1794. Signed: David Brown, Jean (X) Brown. By 3 Sep 1810, Samuel Brown bought 80 acres from Newton Cannon on Thompson's Creek in Bedford Co TN. On 22 Oct 1814, Nicholas Anthony sold Samuel Brown an additional 1 3/4 acres. Was there a spring on this small tract? Then on 4 Jul 1827, Ezekiel W. Brown, Franklin W. Brown & Katharine Brown, sold 81 3/4 acres to Nicholas Anthony. Land on Thompson's Creek of Duck River. Samuel Brown, dec'd was father & husband and bequeathed this tract by his last will & testament.
