Individual Details

William Brown

(1687 - 28 Dec 1757)

According to a post on Genforum, William Brown was overseer of the estate of Joseph Fleming and married Joseph's daughter Margaret "Peggy". Several references give 7 children - not the same as those listed in the Ancestral File. Many people cite the book by Helen Rugeley, DESCENDANTS OF WILLIAM BROWN AND MARGARET "PEGGY" FLEMING, which is available on fiche from LDS. I have listed here those seven children and omitted the extras from the Ancestral File.

William Brown's 411 acres tract in Rowan was surveyed 6 Apr 1754. It was on the South side of North Buffalo Creek across from John Nix; all other adjacent lands were vacant. Son James eventually held title to this land as he's the one that sold it in two tracts:
4 Jul 1770 James Brown of Surry Co sold 211 acres to Rees Porter.
1772 James Brown of Surry & wife Jane sold 220 acres to William Jackson, tract now in Guilford County.

A monument to William and Margaret was erected in the Sally Reed Burying Ground in Anderson County, SC, even though he was surely buried in Rowan Co NC and she was buried outside of Nashville TN. "William Brown, born in Ireland, married Margaret Fleming and had a son, Joseph, born in Ireland, January 1731. Joseph married Mary Porter on 3 Aug 1756."
