Elisha BROWN
(1806 - Bef 1880)
1830 St. Francois Co MO, Pendleton Twp, p.420. Elisha Brown. 1m -5 [John Wesley], 1m 20-30 [Elisha]. 1f -5, 1f 10-30. Elisha married to first wife and here is an unidentified older daughter.
Larry Brown, descendant sent copies of documents from Washington Co MO that indicate Elisha may have had a business relationship with a Reubin Burdine. There are traditions that Elisha did live in Washington Co at some point between 1830 and his departure for Arkansas. These documents include the following:
There is a deed of Mortgage from p.448, Book C dated 21 May 1836. From Elisha Brown & Ruben Burdine to Samuel P. Stone & Reuben Smith, all of Washington Co MO. For $212 and 159.68 acres. Due 21 May 1839. Lot 2 of NE 1/2 and part of and the E 1/2 of Lot 1 of the NE 1/4 of Section 6, Twp 36, Range 3, in Washington Co.
Court orders with no date. Samuel P. Stone & Reubin Smith vs. Elisha Browne & Reubin Burdine. The defendants came not and made no affidavit and plaintiffs were awarded the sum of the debt & costs and damages. Concerned Mortgage of land with same description as Morgage deed above.
Sheriff's Sale from Deed Book E, p.232. Above property description. Judgement dated 14 Nov 1840 in favor of Stone & Smith agst Brown Burdine. Sale held on 6 Jan 1841. Herman Manning was highest bidder for sum of $55. Deed dated 29 Jun 1841. Rec. Court Term Jun 1841.
There was no document of Purchase for Brown & Burdine regarding the above land.
There were two other documents re Burdine. One from DB C, p.593, a Mortgage Deed from Ruben Burdine to David Wigar for $840, the sum of two obligations. Dated 1 Feb 1837. Land was the East 1/2 of the NW Quarter, of Section 34, Twp 37, Range 3, 82.40 acres in Washington Co MO. Then the Sheriff's sale for the same property and the resultant deed was recorded in DB D, p.534, dated 12 Mar 1840. Judgement was 13 Nov 1839 in favor of George Edgar, Adminstrator for David Wigar agst Reuben Burdine on 9 Jan 1840. Sale held 6 Feb 1840. John J. Briskey & George Edger were the highest bidders for the sum of $50.
1840 Searcy Co AR, p.188. Elisha Brown. 1m age 5-10; 1m 10-15 [John Wesley]; 1m 40-49 [Elisha]. 1f -5 [Eliza], 2f 5-10 [Nancy & Keziah], 2f 10-15. Elisha appears to have no spouse in 1840 and there are obviously some children that have not been identified and perhaps did not survice until 1850 or maybe the two oldest daughters had married by that year.
1850 Van Buren Co AR, Craig Twp, p.317, Household 290. Elisha Brown, age 44, b. SC, Mary Ann age 24, b. KY [certainly a 2nd wife]. Keziah age 17, b. MO, Nancy age 14, b. MO, Eliza E., 13, b. MO. The rest of the children probably Mary Ann's and born in AR: Lonzo 5, Lucy F. 2, Parthena 1. And living with them is John W. Brown age 21, b. MO and his wife Eliza J. age 21 and children Mary F. 2, and twins Amanda M. and Elizabeth M. age 2 months.
Given the ages of Elisha's children, Mary Ann was certainly a 2nd wife. I would guess they married sometime after the birth of Eliza in 1837 and before the birth of Alonzo in 1845. Mary Ann may have been a Carter since a son is named Carter.
