Burgess F. Haden

(1836 - 1906)

Burgess is said to have been educated at Trinity College in North Carolina and Bryant & Strattons Business College in Philadelphia. He is said to have worked at the Charleston Navy Yards as a shipbuilder during the Civil War. The article in Makers of America about Jesse Franklin Hayden gives the date of Burgess's marriage to 1860, rather than 1864.

1850 Census, Davidson Co NC. p.276b; Dwelling 797

Wife was Mary Levina Caudle. They are both buried in the Fitzgerald/Haden Cemetery in Davidson Co NC Also two children are in the cemetery: Infant daughter d. 20 Jan 1862. Maco, son, 17 Jan 1864; 11 Jan 1865
NC Marriage Bonds, Davidson Co.: Burgess F. Haden married Mary Caudle 13 Nov 1864.
Both of the dead babies seem to have been born prior to the marriage, yet in 1900, Mary L. Haden stated she had 5 children, 3 living. I wonder if the two in the cemetery were by an earlier wife for Burgess and that Mary L. also lost two babies, or did Burgess and Mary just take their time about marriage...
The bio in Makers of America stated Mary Levina's name was Cauble/Coble and that they had married in 1860.

I found daughter Laura and her husband W. H. Townsend.

W. H. Townsend, b. Feb 1855, age 45, married for 10 years
Laura, wife, b. May 1866, age 34, no children

I also believe I found daughter "Ida", whose name was actually Ada. In 1900 she was in the State Hospital for the Insane, in Morganton, Burke Co NC. She was listed as Ada M. Lutterloh, born 1870, age 30. Then I found Isaac Luttlerloh living in Sanford Twp, Moore Co NC. He was born Jan 1866 and was age 34. He had been married for 5 years. He was a Physician. Although marked as married there was no spouse present in the household. There was a son, Hayden, born Sept 1896, age 3. Also Isaac's brother Thomas H. lived with him, born Sep 1868, age 31. They had a boarder and a Black servant as well.

Burgess's son "Jim" age 5 in 1880, was apparently Jesse F. Haden. I found him in Thomasville, Davidson Co NC in 1910. He was living with his in-laws John & Almeda Green.
John A. Green, age 56, married 1 time for 27 years, b. NC as were his parents and the rest of the family and their parents
Almeda J., wife, age 55, had 4 children only 1 living,
Jesse F. Haden, son-in-law, age 35, married 1 time for 8 years,
Velva, daughter, age 24, has had 2 children
Nellie L., granddaughter age 5
Elizabeth M., granddaughter, age 2.
