In Sep 1766, Edward Watkins gave testimony in Chesterfield Co VA Court for John Clay, son of John & Sarah Watkins Clay. He stated that John Clay dec'd, father of the plaintiff had intermarried with daughter Sarah, now also deceased & mother of the Plaintiff. John Clay and his brother Edward are the only children or issue of my daughter. [Henry Clay descends from this line.]

Date of death given as 25 Mar 1771 is actually date of probate of his will in Cumberland Co. Will dated 21 Jun 1765. Named son John, daughter Martha, grandsons John and Edward Clay, son-in-law Francis Moseley, dau Mary Anderson, dau Judith Bass, grandsons Edward and Samuel Watkins, son Edward, son Thomas.

Will was dated 21 Jun 1765 and proved 25 Mar 1771.

Prior to the Will he had made the following deeds:
14 Sep 1764 To son John all the tract whereon he now lives, south side of Swift Creek in Cumberland Co, also my water grist mill, tract of land I purchased of Thomas More on branch of Butterwood Creek, 200, and a tract I purchased of George Renyer Turner on Swife Creek in Chesterfield Co., also six slaves.
21 Jun 1765 To son Edward all that tract on waters of Butterwood Creek including the plantation whereon I live, 850 acres. Also 12 slaves.
21 Jun 1765 To son Thomas ll that tract whereon he now lives in Henrico Co, being the land given me by my father. and what ready money I shall die possessed of or due me after my debts are paid.
He signed with his mark, an "E".

The children were listed in this order in the will: John, Elizabeth who married John Clay but died before 1765, a daughter who had married Francis Moseley, Mary who had married an Anderson, Judth who had married a Bass and then John Clay who had first been married to her sister, Edward, and Thomas.
