Rawleigh Dodson

(18 Feb 1730 - Aft 1793)

This birth record listed twice, 18 Jan 1730 and 18 Feb 1730.

The marriage record of Rawleigh Dodson has never been located. There is evidence that he lived in Prince William Co around 1759-1761. He may have been a member of Broad Run Baptist Church in 1763 when his name has been transcribed as "Roby". In 1766 "Raughley" Dodson witnessed a deed in Halifax. Then in 1768 he purchased 50 acres of land in Orange Co NC, on the East side Country Line Creek [Orange Co DB 2, p.160] - this tract fell in Caswell County in 1777 and he was assessed for property in Richmond Distrct in that year. 5 Jul 1778, Rawley Dodson & wife Mary of Caswell sold 50 acres on Country Line Crk to Clement Gann [Caswell Co DB A, p.84]. Perhaps at that time the Dodsons moved to Tennessee. The State of North Carolina issued grants to Raleigh Dodson for two tracts of land in Sullivan Co [before Hawkins Co created]; one of these tracts on Dodson's Creek, a branch of the Holston River. Dodson's Ford where the Great War & Trading Path crossed the Holston is nearby.

Will dated 20 Jul 1793, Hawkins Co TN. He was likely still alive in Nov of 1794 when he and son sold property. He left his whole estate to his wife for her lifetime, but did not name her. Dower relinquishments reveal her given name to have been Mary. After her death his plantation and another piece adjoining were to go to his son Rawleigh Dodson. He named grandchildren Mary and Nancy Shelton. Other children named in his will were Margaret [Peggey, wife of Mr. Manafee], Lazarus, Tolliver or Oliver, Eleanor "Nelly" [wife of John Saunders], and James.
Son Lazarus and neighbor Rodham Kenner to be executors.
He signed with his mark.
Witnesses: Thos Jackson, Rodham Kenner, Mary (X) Shelton
