Individual Details
Alexander J. Walters
(26 Apr 1805 - Bef Nov 1848)
Alexander married Louisa Wilson 15 May 1826 but there is also another marriage record in Pittsylvania County for Alexander J. Walters: to Sarah E. Paschall on 13 Aug 1846.
15 May 1826. Alexander Walters and Louisa Wilson, dau of John Wilson who requests that license be issued. Sur: Champness Terry. Married 25 May by Rev. Wm Blair.
Pittsylvania Co. Deeds of gift from Deed Books [1767-1850].
Abstracted on Pittsylvania Co Message Board.
Jan 1828 Archer Walters & wife Catherine to Alexander J. Walters, gift of land.
1830 Census, Pittsylvania Co VA. Alexr. Walters. 1m 15-20, 1m 20-30 [Alexander]; 1f -5, 1f 20-30 [Louisa]. Did Alexander have his brother Azariah who was about age 20 living with him? Azariah did not seem to be in his father's household.
I have no further information about what may have happened to Lousia. Certainly they didn't have a son as old as the male age 15-20.
1 Feb 1840. Alexander's Marriage to Mary F. Vinson in Caswell Co NC. Bond date. Azariah G. Walters bondsman. This recorded in the Caswell Marriage Bonds.
1840 Census, Pittsylvania Co VA. Alexander Walters. 1m age 20-30 [he should have been age 30-40] 1f -5, 1f 10-15, 1f 20-30 [2nd wife].
The ages of the two young females poses a bit of a problem. The female 10-15 could be the child from 1830. Daughters Nannie & Mary would seem to have not yet been born. Certainly they had Alexander's age wrong. But this is apparently Alexander since he's the only man of that name in that county. And he does seem to have had at least one older daughter, see next:
Here would be a clue to an elder daughter:
21 Oct 1844, Daniel Coleman Jr., marriage bond to Martha Ann Walters. Champness A. Terry, Bondsman. Alexander J. Walters, Father.
[If she's marrying in 1844, she's probably at least 18 - or born say about 1826 which works for both 1830 & 1840 censuses] She was more likely about 16 or 17, born soon after the marriage to Lousia, 1826.
There are two Daniel Colemans in Pittsylvania Co in 1850, neither marked as a senior or junior.
One is age 38, and has Elizabeth, age 17, in his household. Probably a wife, but could be a daughter - NOT Martha Ann for sure. [If this is Daniel Jr as it would seem to be, perhaps Martha died.]
The other Daniel Coleman was age 82, his wife Anna T. or P. age 72.
No help there.
There was also a Daniel S. Coleman in Caswell Co NC in 1850. He was age 65, b. VA and had living with him, Ann S. age 23, Spillsby age 22, and Bartlett T., age 21, all born in Caswell Co.
Alexander married a third time, also on the Pittsylvania Co website
13 Aug 1846 Alexander J. Walters to Sarah E. Paschall. She signed for herself. Joel A. Motley, bondsman. Jno. L. Prichard, officiated.
Obviously they were not married long and she apparently declined the care of her stepdaughters, or she herself died.
Index to Probate Records in Pittsylvania Co state that the sale of estate of Alexander J. Walters was held Nov 1848.
