A (17 May, 1862) promoted to Corporal in Sep. 1862, elected 2nd Sgt., 30 Apr 1863; he was wounded 3 Jul 1863 at Gettysburg, returned to duty and appointed 1st Sgt., 31 Dec 1863, promoted to 2nd Lt., 17 Jan 1865; he was captured 3 Apr 1865, at Fairgrounds Hospital, Petersburg, while suffering from bullet wound in right lung. I have seen his name as Azariah Edward, researchers of this family state that his gravestone reads Azariah Edmund Walters (1842-1919). Would seem he was named for his grandfathers. He is buried at Greenview Cemetery, Reidsville, Rockingham Co, NC. The stone states he was the son of Azariah Graves Walters and Eliza Ann Payne Richardson. The stone is pictured on FindAGrave.com.
