George M. Bibb

(30 Oct 1776 - 13 Mar 1859)

If the birth and marriage records were transcribed correctly from the Bibb Bible, he was only 12 when he married - there is obviously an error. I very much suspect the marriage date of May 1789, should have been 1798 since his first child was born about 1801 - I have made that change.

George M. Bibb was a U.S. Senator, Chief Justice of Kentucky, Sec'y of the Treasury of the U. S. & Chancellor of KY, etc.

George's middle name is cited as Mortimer in a brief article under the picture of his father-in-law Gov. Charles Scott. Kentucky Ancestors, [Spring 2004] 162.

T.P.Atticus Bibb states that his father "came to Kentucky 1798, a graduate of two colleges, Hamden-Sydney and William & Mary, and a Licensed Lawyer. He was four times on the Bench of the Court of Appeals, twice as Chief Justice. He was a Senator in Congress in 1812 and resigned and was again elected in 1829. In 1835 he was made Chancellor [presumably KY] and in 1844, Pres. Tyler made him Secretary of the Treasury. Few men have exerted so much influence in life. His legal knowledge was profound and his general knowledge various, accurate and extensive." [T. P. Atticus Bibb's family record is included with the Richard Bibb Bible record, Kentucky Historical Society collection.]
