According to Joan McBride, Tax Rolls for Searcy Co AR are said to have an Oliver Jones 1836-1839. There are evidences that several members of the Brown/Jones families moved back and forth between Searcy Co AR & MO at this time. Abstracted Tax rolls show Oliver Jones in Searcy Co AR in 1839

Mr. Barker had 1850 Newton Co Census information on this family. Family 363, Benton Twp. Oliver, age 42, born in TN & Jennett age 42 born in SC. William W. age 17, b. MO, Malinda 13 and Samuel L. 12, both born in AR. Jasper O. age 6 b. MO, Ambrose age 10, Emmiziah J. age 3, James M. age 1, and Samuel Brown age 78, b. SC. Oliver owned one male slave, age 24.

1860 Newton Co MO. Franklin Twp, P. O. Kent. p.200. Oliver, age 54 born in TN, Jenny born in SC. Malinda, Jasper O., Emma, & James at home. John Fanshier, age 22 from IL lives with them - soon to marry Malinda. No slaves listed this year.
Article on the Oshkosh School from "the Story of Stella and More" Book 2, p. 116 states that the land the school was on was "located by Oliver Jones with Land Warrant No. 58411, Act 1847 ...Entered by Oliver Jones Oct. 8, 1851. Patented to same party June 1, 1852."
Paul Barker's records agree with this Land Warrant entry. Description is the West 1/2 of the SE 1/4 of S26 and the W 1/2 of NE 1/4 of S35, T24, R30.

Family tradition says that Oliver Jones was killed by bushwhackers during the Civil War. His estate was not settled until 1866, but this follows the pattern of other deaths that occurred during the War. The Courts simply did not function until the War was over; the Court house had been burned.

Administration of the estate was granted 24 Sep 1866 to Thomas. J. Cockerell. Newton Co MO. At that time the heirs were determined to be Jennet Jones, widow. Betsey Ann Dabbs, Samuel Jones, Ambrose Jones, Amaziah Jones, Monroe Jones who were in Missouri and Jasper Jones whose residence was unknown. Malinda Jones Fancheir was omitted from this list; the son William was obviously deceased. Malinda's ommission was an apparent oversight as she later signed deeds from the heirs of Oliver Jones. Jasper returned to Newton Co in times to receive his 80 acres of land; perhaps he had been in Texas at the end of the War as so many of the Missouri boys were.

Oliver and Jeannett obviously made it their practice to give 80 acres to each child as they received adulthood. I can account for at least 720 acres owned by Oliver Jones prior to 1861. All of the property in Sections 24, 26, 27 & 35 of Township 24, Range 30 in Newton County. On 19 Jan 1861, Oliver and Jeannett deeded 80 acres to daughter Elizabeth A. Dabbs, obviously a widow [DB G, p.210], Ambrose W. Jones [DB G, p.490], and John C. Fanshier, husband of daughter Malinda [DB H, p.74]. In Mar of 1861, they deeded Samuel L. Jones his 80 acres [DB G, p.593]. Then the Civil War interrupted the process. Some 400 acres was included in the Inventory of Oliver Jones' estate. During the settlement of the estate it was necessary to sell some of the land to raise money for debts - 80 acres was sold to Lewis A. Hill in May of 1868 [DB I, p.210] and another 80 acres in November of the same year [DB I, p.614]. This was apparently enough to satisfy creditors. On 23 Dec 1870, Jeannett deeded 80 acres to youngest son James M. [DB N, p.618] but this was apparently not sufficient to transfer title to him as this deed was repeated on 20 Nov 1871 [DB 17, p.423] and all the heirs of Oliver Jones signed. Also in Nov of 1871, Jasper O. Jones [DB P, p.113] and Emazaiah J. Jones [DB Q, p.520] received their 80 acres, deeds again signed by the other heirs.

There was one last deed recorded in Newton Co. 16 Jan 1888, Jeanett Jones quit claimed for $1, 40 acres to G. E. Hearne. [DB 21, p.56] The legal description of this 40 acres matched that of 40 acres sold to Lewis A. Hill in 1868 to settle debts of Oliver's estate. Perhaps there was some question about the Title.
