William Chamberlin

(Abt 1623 - 22 Oct 1678)

Wife's name unknown.
From WCGS:
Data from "The Two Henry Chamberlins of Hingham, Massachusetts: 1638 -1649," by David Conrad Chamberlin, Sr., in the New England Historical and Genealogical Register, Vol. 139, April 1985, pp.126-138. Also from his lineage.
Of Boston in 1647, William was a Quaker. He bought, Nov. 9, 1647, a house and lot of Francis Smith in Boston situated on the west side of Washington St., between Boylston and West streets and bounded on the west by the "common." On Jan. 4, 1648, he assigned this lot back to Smith. William Chamberlin was mentioned as owing to the estate of Martin Stebbins in 1659 (Suffolk Co. Probate, NEHGS Register, 1878). He removed to Hull, MA, between 1649 and 1655, and in 1657 was granted 11 parcels of land by the Proprietors. These grants included 2 acres in the village, lots at Peddock's Island, Hogge Island, Strawberry Hill, White Head, Sagamore Hill, meadow at Lincoln's Rocks, Huett's Point, etc. He was a Selectman at Hull in 1658 and in 1662, and appraised the estate of Thomas Loring. In Dec. 1675 one William, his son or nephew, was one of the Hull soldiers in the Narraganset campaign under Moseley.
William was married twice, but the names of both wives remain unknown.* He together with his brother Henry and mother Jane, was named Executor of his father's will in 1673. They sold the property in Hingham in 1674/75. He himself died of smallpox and intestate - inventory and judgment dated 28 Jan 1678, his estate being valued at 529 pounds. Approval was granted in Suffolk Court, Nov. 12, 1680. The division of his son Freedom's estate in 1685 identify which children were born by William's first wife and those born by his second wife.
(*) Although most genealogies indicate that the names of both wives are unknown, there are occasional genealogies that show the name of the second wife as Sarah Jones, daughter of Thomas Jones and Mary North. I find little support for this. David Conrad Chamberlin, Sr., says flat out that "in fact she was the wife of his brother Henry." (J. B. Parker)

Lineage submitted by Alice Wentworth, WCS member #009, shows William's first wife as Mary (-?-) [per Bill Mennel].
