Joseph Chamberlin

(Abt 1665 - 7 Aug 1752)

From WCGS:
Misc. Facts: He went from Hull to Hadley, Mass., where he married Mercy Dickinson. He settled at Colchester, Connecticut, a tavern-keeper. See Ch'n Chain, Br. #4 Cont. (by Susan Waite) for documentation. 9 children.
William James of Scituate was appointed his guardian in 1685. "Joseph Chamberlin of Hull, cordwainer," for 12 pounds, deeded "my brother William Chamberlin of Hull, weaver, land on Pettox Island which was our father William Chamberlin's and afterwards our brother Freedom Chamberlin's and now mine," March 30, 1687. A resident of Hatfield, he moved to Hadley, MA about 1688 and married Mercy Dickinson there, June 8, 1688. Joseph Chamberlin of Hadley executed at Hatfield, May 29, 1693, a power of attorney unto his brother William Chamberlin of Hull. Mercy Chamberlin, his wife, quitclaimed all interest in her husband's estate at Hull unto Nathaniel Chamberlin, weaver, and John Collier, husbandman, both of Hull, May 31, 1695. He was a petit juror at Hadley in 1701, and his taxes were referred to at Hadley and Hatfield, in 1705. The earliest mention of him at Colchester was April 1, 1703, when the proprietors of Colchester "granted to Thomas Day the lott that was formerly granted to Joseph Chamberlin," and Oct. 30, 1704, they "further granted unto Joseph Chamberlin twenty acres of upland for his meadow if it be on Wigwam Hill" with 200 pounds right. Proof is wanting to show that he ever lived in Weathersfield, Conn., as Stiles stated.
He was known to be a selectman in Colchester in 1705, 1706, 1716-18 and perhaps other years. In Colchester, he was licensed to keep an "ordynary," and he became proprietor of a prosperous tavern and host to many traveling notables, from 1710 until about 1748. The Governor and Council of Connecticut ordered the treasurer to pay him 1 pound,13 shillings, for entertaining the French ambassadors when they passed through Colchester to and from New London in March, 1711. In 1714 he presented a bill of 14 shillings, 5 pence for Lieutenant Crocker's expenses. He was made a freeman in Dec. 31, 1712. He and his wife Mercy were both members of the church at Colchester. He lived on the main road leading from New London to Hartford, and about one mile north of the present village of Colchester. He was a large landowner there, and about 1741 sold large portions of his estate to his sons: "Joseph Chamberlin of Colchester 'for the love and good will that I do Bare to my Son William Chamberlin of Colchester', sells him 'one mansion house and home lot' in Colchester, containing 21 acres. Signed 29 Sep 1714 (Colchester Deeds, Vol. 2, p. 90)." His wife Mercy died there, June 30, 1735, in the 67th year; he, August 7, 1752 (grave-stones). They were buried in the old parish cemetery in Colchester.

The following statement is included in Chamberlin Genealogy prepared by Georg Finch Chamberlin, April 1901: "I examined all deeds of grantees and grantors between 1636 and 1800 for the Counties of Hampden, Hampshire, Franklin, and Berkshire, in Massachusetts, and fine none to the names Jehu, Judah, Joseph nor Williams. If they owned land in western Massachusetts, their deeds are not on record. They may have received grants from the proprietors of the townships, in which case the proprietors records only would show the facts."
