Harry Chamberlin, of St Albans, NY was age 28, born 15 Sep 1888 in Rod Oak, Iowa. He was a toolkeeper for Baker Smith & Co. He had served for one year as a Private in the Massachusetts milita. Short, Slender, Black hair, brown eyes.

In 1917, while World War I was raging in Europe, Harry Dennis, and his wife Marguerite, found employment working at Curtis Air Field in Bethpage. Here they participated in the building of three large aircrafts called NC 4 Boats. These were amphibious planes built to fly the Atlantic Ocean. Harry was commended for his efforts on this project with a Commendation of Excellence.

Miss Maybelle Kuhn was bridesmaid and Harry Weitzal was best man. Mr. and Mrs. Chamberlin will make their home on Schley Street, in the Ridgewood section.

Services for Harry D. Chamberlin, 76, of Copaigue will be held tomorrow at 10:30 a.m. in the Lawrence D. Rouse Funeral Home, 3361 Park Ave., Wantagh. Cremation will follow in Fresh Pond Crematory. Mr. Chamberlin died early Saturday in his home at 260 26th Street, after a long illness. Born in Red Oak, Iowa, he lived in Copaigue for eight years, moving there from St Albans. Retired for ten years, he had been employed as a floor manager in the Westbury Hotel in Manhattan. He leaves his widow, Marguerite, a past president of the Lincoln's Republican Club of St Albans; four sons. George of Huntington, Martens of Plainedge, Edward of Massapequa, and Bradford of Wantagh; and eight grandchildren.

Harry Dennis Chamberlin was likely born in a covered wagon parked in a barn on September 15, 1888, in Red Oak, Montgomery County, Iowa. At the time of his birth, Grover Cleveland was President. He was educated in Europe. He spoke four languages. He was a multi-talented gentleman and professional. He was involved in rescue efforts when 1,500 perished in sinking of ship, Eastland, near Chicago, Illinois. He was commended for his aero-mechanics and engineering contribution to flight during World War I. He suffered through the Great Depression in midlife. He watched three of his four sons defend their country during World War II, and the fourth join the service on his 17th birthday. He retired as floor manager for the fashionable Hotel Westbury, in New York, in 1953, and died January 30, 1965 in Coppaigue, Suffolk County, NY when Lyndon Baines Johnson was President.
Master of Many Talents
Harry was learned in the black art of fortune telling with an expertise in reading tea leaves, playing cards or reading palms. He was familiar with astrological charts. He was an artist able to paint and draw with pencil and chalk. He creatively decorated store windows and dance halls. He used his artistic abilities to paint astrological and horoscope charts. He taught elocution. And ball room dancing. He was a tap and soft shoe dancer. He was gifted in acrobatics. He studied acting and music. He had an uncanny ability to look and act like Charlie Chaplin.. He was an accomplished photographer, developing and printing his own negatives. He built crystal radios in the early day of radio. He could repair any radio and he was an accomplished automobile mechanic. He was a good electrician. He enjoyed sewing by hand or machine and he enjoyed cooking especially, doughnuts, oatmeal and waffles.. He extended his high school education at Erasmus High School in Brooklyn, New York and Emerson College in boston, Massachusettts.
In 1967, Harry's wife Marguerite wrote a letter about an article she read concerning the Great Lake Steamer, Eastland, “Harry was involved in the rescue effort.” On July 24, 1915, Harry helped rescue passengers on the capsized Great Lake Steamer, Eastland. It is reported up to 1,500 persons died in this incident. Almost as many perished as on the Titanic. In 2004, none of his living children were familiar with this heroism involving their father.
