My Favorite Ancestor I Never Knew: My mother tells me Grace held me in her arms when I was an infant. I have no memory of her doing so. Our lives overlaped 12 years but I have no independent memory of ever seeing her or talking to her. For most of my first 12 years my great-grandmother suffered from Alzheimers disease and lived in a New York Poor Farm. My father visited her, but I never remember doing so. She is my favorite ancestor I never knew on many levels but for one, her personal story is so compelling. She was raised in an upper middle class home. At age 15 she lost her mother and best friend. At age 17, she eloped with my great-grandfather for the privilege of living in a mud home or covered wagon at best. She had only one child, my grandfather, who she did not raise because his paternal grandmother offered to pay for his education in Europe. She was divorced by the time she was 26 years old, but might as well have been divorced at age 20. She lived a robust, free life after she divorced my great-grandfather. She loved my father and is the reason he spent 30 years of his life studying genealogy. She left me 500 negatives of pictures I had developed showing me the places she went and the people she went with. She kept diaries and took the time to tell my father family stories of genealogical interest. I could go on, and probably will go on with later comments. George Richard Chamberlin
