George Clinton Chamberlin

(29 Apr 1809 - 12 Sep 1851)

Birth record from Strafford states that George Clinton Chamberlin was born 29 April 1809. His father was Amasa Chamberlin; his mother, Polly. It should be noted that he was born some nine years after his nearest sibling, and his proposed mother, Molly Briscoe may well have been too old for child-bearing. His mother is listed as Polly on the birth record. Polly/Molly somewhat interchangeable in this time period as both were nicknames for Mary. Vermont Vital Records, img 199, FamilySearch.org. I believe this is NOT Geroge Clinton's lineage.

The 1810 census for Amasa Chamberlin in Orange Co, VT, lists Amasa Chamberlin, 2 males 10-16, 1 male 16-26, 1 male over 45. 1 female 10-16, 1 female 16-26, 1 female of 45. No place for the one-year-old George here.
Amasa Chamberlin, Jr. has 1 child under 10, 2 age 10-16, and himself as 26-45. 5 females under 10, 1 female 10-16, 1 female 26-45.

Another researcher has placed George Clinton in the family of Isaac Chamberlin (1783-1863) and his wife Polly Harriman whose residence is listed as Tunbridge. Isaac was a son of Elias Chamberlin and nephew of Amasa, born in Strafford. Their first two children born in Strafford 1807 and 1812 - leaving a place for George. By 1850 they were in Clark Co, OH. Since the vital records were copied - an error was certainly possible and this place for George Clinton seems more likely.

George and his wife Sophronia were third cousins.

Except for his early childhood and the last month of his life, George Clinton resided his entire life in or near Lisbon in Harmony Township, Clark County, Ohio. His life was a life of certainty but his death is shrouded in uncertainty and mystery. He died residing on a small lot in nearby South Charleston, Clark County, Ohio. His premature death left a widow and nine children in a state of great uncertainty, economic hardship, and instability. There is no monument to mark his grave in Lisbon where his parents are buried. He is not buried near his wife or children. Where he lies no man knows. His lasting monument were his nine children and the respected name of his wife, Sophronia. Sophronia eternally links the Chamberlin surname with the Hanford surname. She survived the mysterious death of her husband by 54 years.
