Bernard "Barney" Shannon

(4 Mar 1861 - 22 Jan 1943)

After Barney and Minnie were married against the wishes of the Smyth fa m ily, by a priest cousin of Barney Shannon, the newlyweds returned to t h e Smyth home to inform the family of the Happy Event and inform them t h at they also had booked passage to America, (Boston, Mass.) where some o f t he Shannon's had gone. Father Ed Smyth is said to have commented "th at i f you want my blessing you go and change your passage to New York a nd g o to Rome, N.Y. where my brother John Smyth lives and he'll help yo u g et started." Upon his first inkling of acceptance to the Shannon's, M i nnie and Barney rearranged passage to New York (Probably Ellis Island - J u ne- July or August 1888). This dispels my common belief that the Shann o ns entered America through Boston. Joe Moon.
