Mrs. Maude Kirkpatrick Carter, of Cherryville died Monday, October 31, 2005 at Carolina Care Center. Born in Richburg, South Carolina, she was a daughter of the late George Kirkpatrick and Sara Drennan Kirkpatrick. She retired as a teacher, coach and guidance counselor for Gaston County School Systems after 45 years of service. Mrs. Carter was a member of First United Methodist Church of Cherryville for 67 years, where she was a member of the Mae Harrelson Sunday School Class and she recently received her 50 year pin for perfect attendance; she was also a member of the Lola Allran Circle and the Young at Heart. Mrs. Carter also served in various other capacities at the church. She was also a member of the Order of the Eastern Star Chapter 156, Cherryville and the Tryon Resolves Chapter of the Daughters of the American Revolution. She received an award for highest average in her mathematics class in college, also received a gold medal while she was in college for Best All Around Athelete. She was recognized by her Alma Mater, Lander University with a Distinguished Alumni Award. Listed in Notable Americans, Piedmont Personalities of the South and International Who's Who of Intellectuals. After retirement Maude served as an elected member of the Gaston County School Board. The value she has always placed on higher education led to two long-in-place Maude K. Carter scholarships. The second scholarship is also in memory of her late husband of 64 years, Thomas Autrey Carter. In addition to her parents, she was preceded in death by her husband, T.A. "Tommy" Carter, four brothers and two sisters. She is survived by a sister and also a number of nieces and nephews. Burial will follow at City Memorial Cemetery.
