William Richard Lathrop

William Richard Lathrop, 86, former editor-publisher of the Dutton sentinel and for the past five years a resident of Conrad, died at his home in Conrad last week. Funeral services were conducted last Saturday at Dutton with the Rev. Wilbur Hooper of the Methodist church officiating. Burial was in the Dutton cemetery. Lathrop came to Montana in 1913 when he was associated with E. B. Weldy, publisher and promoter who owned a string of newspapers in the high line. In 1914 Lathrop bought the Shelby News from John Ferguson and operated the paper until 1916, when he moved to Dutton and established the Dutton sentinel. In 1939 he retired. In 1946 Lathrop had a stroke of paralysis, and never fully recovered. Later he had a second stroke, and for many months had been confined to his bed. Lathrop was born in Rochester, Minn. He married Ada Kirkpatrick in Hudson, Wis. October 12, 1891. He is survived by his widow, 3 sons and two daughters, 15 grandchildren, and 9 great-grandchildren. Sons and daughters are Paul of Great Falls, Lloyd of Tacoma, William of Seattle, and Mrs. R. F. Hays and Mrs. M. E. Beringer of Conrad.
