Greensburg Daily News, Greensburg, Indiana, November 9, 1961: Former Store Owner Is Dead. Cliff Kirkpatrick, Conservation Leader. Clifford P. Kirkpatrick, 76, a widely known figure in retail business in Greensburg for many years and a former conservation leader in Indian died at 745 p.m. Wednesday in Memorial hospital here. For several years he had been in declining health. His condition had been serious for the past three months. A resident of Greensburg and Decatur county most of his life Mr. Kirkpatrick was the son of William A. and Ella Eubank Kirkpatrick. He was born in Decatur county on March 12, 1885. After graduating from Greensburg high school in 1905, Mr. Kirkpatrick entered retail business here in the shoe and clothing fields. He was employed by the late Lemuel P. Dobyns at the former Carter Clothing Store here and later was associated with the late Roy C. Kanouse at the Kanouse Shoe Store. After operating the Economy Shoe Store for several years, Mr. Kirkpatrick located on the west side of the business district, establishing the Leader Shoe Store here. Following the sale of his shoe store, Mr. Kirkpatrick served as area engineer for the Works Progress Administration for several years. His first assignment was in Decatur county. Later, he served as assistant supervisor for the federal program in Decatur and Bartholomew counties.
Active Conservationist
An active figure in the field of conservation, he served for a number of as secretary of the Decatur County Sportsmen's Club. His work attracted attention with the result that he was elected a director of the Indiana Fish, Game and Forest League in 1931. The following year he was chosen as president of the state league. Until his retirement several years ago he had been identified with automotive sales and parts. Mr. Kirkpatrick was a member of the Greensburg Methodist church and had been affiliated with Greensburg lodge No. 36 F. & A. M. for over 50 years. He was a charter member of the Greensburg Kiwanis club the period in which he was active in retail business here. On Oct. 10, 1910, he was married at Selbyville to Gladys L. Feaster. The couple observed their golden wedding anniversary in 1960. For the past 15 years Mr. Kirkpatrick had resided on R. R. 7, Greensburg, seven miles southeast of this city. The survivors include: The widow, Mrs. Gladys Kirkpatrick, of R. R. 7, Greensburg; three sons, John W. Kirkpatrick and Ross P. Kirkpatrick, both of Indianapolis and Dr. Charles M. Kirkpatrick of West Lafayette, a professor at Purdue University; a sister, Mrs. Patrick (Cecil) Gannon, of Greensburg; a nephew William E. Gannon, of this city; and seven grandchildren. A sister, Hazel, passed ways in infancy. Funeral services will be held at 2 p.m. Saturday in Gilliland-Howe funeral home. The Rev. Robert F. DeLong, pastor of the Greensburg Methodist church will officiate. Burial will be in South Park cemetery. Friends may call at the funeral home after 2 p.m. Friday.
