Individual Details

Edmund Singleton Kirkpatrick

(22 Feb 1810 - 10 Sep 1876)

Edmund, who is called Edward in many records, was born in Jackson County, TN 22 Feb 1810 and died 10 Sep 1876, Lawrence Co., AR. He was the child of John Kirkpatrick's first marriage to a woman who has not been identified. Edmund himself was married twice. His first wife, whom he married in 1830 in Illinois, was Anna Barnett Woodrome, daughter of John and Jemima (Edwards) Woodrome. She was born 3 Mar 1814 in TN and died in late 1860. Most of the Children came from this union. The second marriage to Mrs. Elizabeth (Smithee) Goacher took place in 1861. She was mother to four children by Edmund but only one is identified. In addition to being a farmer, Edmund Singleton Kirkpatrick was a brick and stone mason. He built some of the first houses in Batesville, AR. In 1835 the family moved to Independence County, AR, and in 1836 to Washington Township, Lawrence County, AR, where they are listed in the 1850 census. The census lists him as Edward Singleton Kirkpatrick, but he is obviously the same man. We know that he served in the Black Hawk War in 1832, and in 1850 and 1855, he applied for bounty land warrants based on this service. The applications for warrants came from Lawrence County, AR.

The census data did give his wife as Anna B. and gives her age as 37.

Edmund served as a private under Captain William J. Stephenson, 1st Brigade, 2nd Regiment, Illinois Mounted Volunteers, in the Black Hawk War. He mustered at Hennepin, Illinois and served briefly. According to the 'Centennial History of Arkansas', Edmund was at the Battle of Kellogg's Grove and had a horse shot out from under him. He was awarded a bounty land warrant for the service and applied for a second which we are not certain he received. His brother, William T. Kirkpatrick, served with the same unit.
