Melvin Eugene Herbert was the son of Fred Everett Herbert and Jessie Vena Brown. He married Isla Irene Manuel January 23 1943 at Holton, KS. They lived in Oskaloosa, KS for many years. Following Isla's death, Melvin moved to Topeka, KS and lived at the Hearthstone Retirement Center. Melvin was a salesman and is retired now. He was raised in the Black Hills near Custer, SD. He enlisted in the Cavalry in 1941, training at Ft. Riley, KS. Was a member of Mexican Border Patrol. Member of "F" Troop, 14th Cavalry Regiment until 1942. Served with 9th Armored Division, 776th Amphibious Tank Battalion. Was a tank commander and Staff Sergeant. He took extensive training at Ft. Ord, CA and went overseas in June, 1944. Served in Philippines, Leyte, and Okinawa. He landed on Okinawa on Easter Morning, 1945. They had two children:
Jacquelyn Kay, b. 8 Nov 1943, m. Kirk Dewayne Natalie; Terrance Eugene, b. 13 May 1950. m. Pamela Yvonne Slavens.
