Survivors include his widow, Jessie, Custer; two sons, Fred E., Jr., Custer, and Melvin, Oskaloosa, Kan.; a daughter, Edith Herbert, Michell; four grandchildren and one great-grandchild. A memorial has been established for the Custer Fire Department.
