Obituary from Anadarko, Oklahoma area newspaper: Services slated for city's oldest resident. Services for Wendell Francis Briscoe, 102, of Anadarko will be held at 10:30 a.m. Tuesday at the First Presbyterian Church with the Rev. Glenwood Buzbee, retired pastor of the church, officiating. Briscoe was born Dec. 4, 1894 in Norman to Alford Eugene and Elva (Butler) Briscoe and died Friday at his home in Anadarko. Briscoe grew up in the Anadarko area and graduated from Anadarko High School. He and Rachel E. Downing were married on Dec. 15, 1915 in Anadarko. They were in their 72nd year of marriage when she died in August 1987. The Briscoes farmed in this area for many years and for several years he managed the cotton gin in Poscasset. he was also the bookkeeper for Chickasha Cotton Oil for a few years, and was the auditor for some government programs during the Depression. He was elected to two terms as Caddo County Court Clerk. He was a member of the Anadarko Presbyterian Church, and had been mason since 1918. He was a member of the Anadarko Masonic Lodge, a 32nd Degree Scottish Rite, past Worshipful Master of the Anadarko and Verden lodges, and had been Deputy Grand Master of District 10. He received his 60 year pin from Eastern Star several years ago, and served as Rainbow Dad for 42 years for the Anadarko Chapter of the Order of Rainbow for Girls. He was an avid checker player in his younger days, and was a member of the Oklahoma State Militia preparing to enter World War I when the armistice was signed. In addition to his parents and his wife, Briscoe, was preceded in death by one brother, Lamont R. Briscoe. Survivors include his son and daughter-in-law Bonnie Briscoe of Ardmore; his daughter Winona Briscoe Evans of Oklahoma City; two grandsons and their wives, John R. and Lauren Kern of Brentwood, Tenn. and Ronald P. and Stephanie Kern of Odessa, Texas; four great-grandchildren and one great-great grandchild; also other relatives, thoughtful neighbors and loving care providers and precious friends. Masons from the Anadarko Lodge No. 21 will serve as bearers of the casket and will perform Masonic graveside rites. Burial will be in Memory Lane Cemetery under the direction of the Steverson Funeral Home of Anadarko.
