Death
https://www.dignitymemorial.com/obituaries/wheat-ridge-co/dorothy-whittier-526484096, passed away on October 6, 2012 in Lakewood. Dorothy Lillian Hardman was born August 5, 1916, in Newark, New Jersey. Dorothy moved to Newark, Ohio where she met her husband John Greenleaf Whittier at the Salvation Army camp. Dorothy wanted to pursue a career in nursing and enrolled in nursing school, however, her love for John, was cause for her to drop out of nursing school. Dorothy and John borrowed $5.00 and a car and crossed into Kentucky to get married, in August of 1936. Dorothy was a loving, caring and supportive wife and mother to her beloved Johnny and her children Jack, Mike, Janie, and Beth. Although Dorothy and Johnny’s life together began in Newark, Ohio, they eventually moved to Kansas City, Kansas, where their four children graduated from high school. Dorothy was very big into making sure she was supportive of her children’s activities, while maintaining a household, and volunteering and working as a teacher’s aide and library aide for the Kansas City Public Schools. Dorothy and Johnny had the proud distinction of watching all of their children go onto and graduate from college. Dorothy and Johnny had a wonderful retired life after moving to Colorado. Dorothy loved to travel with Johnny, and went to Europe, Egypt, an Alaskan cruise, and traveled in their motorhome. When Dorothy was not traveling internationally with Johnny, they were taking local road trips on their Harley Davidson motorcycle, or enjoying the beautiful Colorado Scenery in their Fiat Spider or Porsche.
Dorothy was very big into Christmas, and her cookies were always a treat and something everyone looked forward to. She made wonderful chocolate chip cookies, strawberries, and her famous bourbon balls, with a bottle of bourbon that had to have been 40 years old. Dorothy loved to cook and host meals, and impromptu gatherings to watch Bronco games. Dorothy volunteered at Patterson Elementary School, Lutheran Medical Center, and delivering meals on wheels. Dorothy also loved to knit and sew, and her talent was incredible. Dorothy loved her grandchildren, Camille, Erick, Rachel, Tia, Casey, Geoff and Cadence. Dorothy also had eleven great grandchildren, Calle’, Matthew, Kyra, Quentin, Anna, Maggie, Brenden, Adam, Brycen, Kailyn, and Clayton. Dorothy is also survived by her loving children; Jack &(Karen) Whittier, Mike &(Diane) Whittier, Janie &(Mike) Whittier, and Beth Whittier.
She was succeeded in death by her Brother David Hardman, Sister Alice Kelly, and of course her Beloved Johnny. Dorothy was a remarkable woman, wife, mother, grandmother and great grandmother, who has left an impact on everyone’s life she touched.
