DePuy/DePue family history
"The three children, 6, 5, and 2 years old", who came with Nicolaes DePui (and) wife" (18) to New Netherland in October 1662 included Moses. Since John has been considered the oldest, Moses would be 5. Heber G. Gerhart shows him probably born in 1660 in listing Nicholas' family, but 1657 in showing Moses' own family. (19) Born in France or the Netherlands Moses married Maria Wynkoop about 1680. Maria was the daughter of (1) Cornelius Wynkoop who was in Albany by 1655, removed to Kingston prior to 1671; and (2) Maria Janse Langendyck. (20) Maria Dupuy died before October 1724 when Moses married Peterneltjen DePree Van Aken, widow of Marinus Van Aken of Rochester. Marius Schoonmaker in his "History of Kingston, New York" has an intriguing account of Moses and Maria's meeting which the author refers to as a family tradition. Moses, according to Schoonmaker (p 476) "was about to set sail in command of a ship, and pending the loading of the vessel he visited Kingston and met Miss Wynkoop, fell in love at first sight, abandoned his contemplated voyage, and courted and married her, thus was he drawn in this direction, and became on of the pioneer settlers of the town of Rochester."
It is noteworthy that three of Moses and Maria's sons and one daughter married into the Jochem and Anna Hussey Schoonmaker family. Historian Marius Schoonmaker makes a unique reference to that relationship when he says " ... there appears to have been a wonderful intimacy and more than friendly feeling" between the two families.
When New Netherland was transferred to English control "the non-English inhabitants were then required to swear allegiance to the King of England." (21) "The coveted freedom of a city, which enables its possessor to carry on his trade or profession, was regularly preceded by taking an oath of allegiance." (22) Lists of persons who took the act of allegiance required by a June 13, 1687 proclamation are preserved. The Ulster County New York list taken September 1, 1687 includes the name of Moses Depuis in that spelling. (23)
"Mosyse Dupuy, of Ulster Co., 8/9 Sept. 1715", is shown among Naturalizations. (24) While this could refer to Moses Jr. the assumption is made that it refers to Moses Sr. as head of the household (Moses Jr not yet being married).
"Moses Dupee" is listed as receiving in excess of two pounds, based on a rate of three pence per day for military service between November 1697 and May 1698. He served in Captain John Nanfan's company and was paid "out of ye money raised by act of assembly for ye making 300 Effective men at ye fronters at Albany." (25) He next appears in public records this time as Moses Du puie in a "Petition of the Protestants of New York" to King William III as of December 30, 1701. (26) From Marius Schoonmaker we learn that Moses was one of the original trustees listed in the grant of Queen Anne in 1703 to the town of Rochester, Ulster County. (27)
We do not have any reference to size of land holdings but if he were a leading citizen of his area, as Hoff states, we can assume Moses' possessions were considerable. Further, three of his children, Moses Jr, Benjamin and Sara married into the Jochem and Anna Hussey Schoonmaker family of Kingston; Jochem was a militia officer and prominent enough to leave inheritances in his will, proved November 7, 1730, to his sixteen children. (28)
In 1728 Moses appears (with Moses Jr) in a "List of the Freeholders within the County of Ulster." (29) He also is shown with twenty six other among "Old ofesers and old men" in "A lest of the Commanding Officers as Milltery and Sivel", all of them falling within the term "Ulster County Militia." (30)
Moses' date of death is uncertain. The National Society, Daughters of Colonial Wars lists his lifetime as 1658-1728. (31) A 1936 article on the "Old Churchyard at Rochester, Ulster County, N.Y. (now Accord, N.Y.)" lists a "field stone Anno 1714 M DePu. . . Gestorben (died) 17 (chipped) (Note: Probably the grave of one Moses DePuy), (32) Mrs. Elizabeth D. Walters, East Stroudsburg, Pa., herself a descendant of Moses' son Nicholas, lists ca 1754 as his date of death. (33) Further evidence of this date appears in the Pall Record of the First Dutch Reformed Church of Rochester, Ulster County; income from the pall was given to the poor. Entry in the Pall Records was "1754, Jan 30 Moses Depue for his father." (33a)
