Thomas and Phebe Canfield moved to Milford, Conn. as early as 1646.

The town of Milford was settled in 1639, by men from Wethersfield and New Haven. In the early records of the town are the entries.
"A Generall Court at Milford December 31th, 1646."
"Ordered that Thomas Canfield, Thomas hine, Henry Lyon, Have hous lotts and 2 acres of Meadow apeece granted Them."
Also
"A Generall Court at Milford, January 31th, 1647."
"(Thom)as Canfield and Thomas Ford shall have (their second d)ivision together with their quarter division (at a place) where it is not Sized on the South side of the (Highway) which goeth to the new meadow"
The parts in () are missing, but are supplied from an old copy of the record. These are the earliest records of Thomas Canfield that have been found* (*The Oath of Fidelity as written in 1639 together with the names of earliest signers. Among the signatures is that of Tho: Coefield, but as this name is not found elsewhere in the early records of the colony it must have been for Thomas) They prove that he was in Milford as early as the year 1646. He may have come from Wethersfield by the way of New Haven, as there is a tradition that he was in both of these places.
The Church records of Milford state that Thomas Campfield was added to the Church 1 Mar 1656.
In the records of the town are found these items:
"Towne Meeting January 12 1659 - "
"Thomas Canfield concerning his lott in the plains hath Liberty granted unto him to alter his stakes, namely to Lay downe some part of his lott that is full of wood at the one end of his lott and to take it up at the other end of his lott." (Other records show his name spelled Camfield, Camphield, and Campfield.)
Facts taken from "The Public Records of the Colony of Conn." : This Court confirmes Thomas Campfeild and Samuel Eeles Sarjeants of the Traine Band of Milford. (May 13, 1669).
The Court of Election or the General Court was the legislature of the colony. Thomas Canfield represented the town of Milford in the General Courts held at Hartford, 9 Oct. 1673, 26 nov. 1673, May and 8 Oct 1674 and 12 Oct 1676.
In the list of Freemen of the several towns of Connecticut, dated October 1669, under the head of Milford is the name of "Thomas Camppheild."
In Probate Records, Vol. 2, page 303, it reads:
"I Thomas Canphield Senior of Milford in the County of New haven being of sound memorie doe leave this as a memorandum not knowing y' anything else may be don in maner & form as followth. i doe give my soul to God my Faithfull Creator & to Christ as my merifull redeemer & my body to a Christian buriall and my Estate in maner following: I doe give to my Three daughters that are married out Sarah Phebe and Elizabeth five pounds apeece to be paid a year after my wives decease to my Daughter Abigaill three acres of land in the Old planes o ye heither side, the remaindr in yt place To Thomas a year after my wives decease I doe give to all my grand Chrildren ten shillings apeece to be paid a yeare after my wives decease. Likewise all Lands that I have engaged to Thomas that is not yet recorded I doe still Confirme ye same: and to my son John Smith for their present imrpovemt Likewise I doe Give to my three daughters that are unmarried twenty pounds apeice to be paid at the day of marriage or att two & twenty yeares of age: moreover I give to my beloved wife Phebe Canpheild the Liberty of my Old Hous and all the rooms about it dureing her life Time not to be mollested and to be kept in Constant repair by my two Sonns Thomas and Jeremiah moreover I give to her out of he Estate ten pounds a yeare to be paid to her in provision that may be suteable to maintaine her Familie: and to Take her choice of two Cows & to have two Cows constantly kept and the increase of them and to be kept Winter and Summer by my two sons Thomas & Jeremiah. Moreover I doe give to my beloved Wife all my houshold Stuffe of all Sorts to be at her dispose aat her death likewise to breed up what Swine She can and to have the liberty of the Orchard for what she doth need likewise I give to my Wife all the provision that is laid in ye House or may be laid in. I give to her all the Corne that is in the House and in the Barne and all the Swine in Present being to be at her dispose. My Will is that my Wife should have three parts of the wooll this yeare. And Jeremiah the rest this Yeare And that my Wife should have half from yeare to yeare during her lifetime ye: Other half to be divided betweene Thomas & Jeremiah. My Will is further yt my two Sonns Should Sow my Wife half an Acre of Flax from yeare to yeare and help her to manage it: moreover I doe make my two Sonns Thomas and jeremiah my executs of the rest of my Estate and to Give it jointly betweene them Equally to be divided note that parcell of land which I gave to Thomas in the ninth Lie: I doe give it upon this Condition yt: he doe not bring the estate into Debt if he doth he shall not hav it. i doe Further declare it is my mind that all the portions and the Legacies Should be paid Jointly by my Two Sonns Thomas & Jerimiah ye rest to be divided I meane Houses Orchards homlott all Lands and meadows neare hand or further off improved or not Improved to be divided Equally Concerning Jeremiah I give his part i maner following I doe Give it to him and his Children that shall be hereafter lawfully begotten of his own body but in case he die without any more Children it shall return to Thomas and his Children he paying five pounds apeece more to his sisters that are unmarried. Also I give to my daughter Elizabeth a young beast and all the rest of my Cattle not already given of all Sorts.
