Sheridan' Cavalry, to which I belonged, surprised and captured nearly the whole of the rebel General Jubal Early's command, consisting of about two thousand infantry and artillery, who were entrenched behind earthwork, guarding the mountain pass. Early's army became confused when we swept down upon them and broke for the mountains in an effort to escape while we being mounted, rode abort them, compelling their surrender. I came upon this color bearer, whom I soon persuaded that the best thing for him to do was to quietly hand me over the said flag"
