Birth
Jane Evelyn Duffy was living with her mother, Ann Duffy, in the 1881 English census.They were living with Ann's mother in Ashton-under-Lyne. Question arises as to why she did not use her married name, if she was married? A search of existing church and civil records revealed no marriage registration. Also no records for the birth of Jane Evelyn was found. Rare documents for Duffy or Gould were found. It is possible they were non-conformists. A suggestion that James Gould was Jewish has some merit but he had a christian given name, must be investigated. Manchester area was a home to many Jewish people and the good records were searched for a James or Robert Gould with negative results. In 1880 the Jews were required to adopt a surname and research before that time requires more knowledge than I presently have.
1900 Census indicated born in England, she immigrated in 1883. Cound not come to United States initially with family because she had the measles,

James Gould born April 1834 in England, age 66 married 21 years, immigrated 1881, naturalized, farmer, rents farm; wife Hannah age 39, born October 1860, married 21 years, has had 8 children and 5 are living, born in England. Informant on Hannah Duffy Gould death certificate was Mrs Janice Cornelius. Found a 1910 census with Jennie E Cornelius age 29 born in England and immigrated in 1883. She is listed with Jim Cornelius and both are listed as employees of the State School for the blind. Alva would talk of the blind school down the street from where they lived. She did not mention that her sister may be working their, but it is possible considering the failing memory.Census

Cemetery records list James Lafayette Seaction C, 153, 4 born 13 Dec 1881 and dies 16 September 1937, the next grave is Jane E (Gould) born 17 June 1880 and died 22 January 1949

-Searched on-line and English registration of births microfiche at SLC on January 2006. Search Gould and Duffey/Duffy with no results. Jane was listd as a Duffey at 10 months of age in the 1881 census.Endnotes
