Marriage

This marriage date given in the 1910 census may be in error. Hannah was still living with her mother in Ashton-Under-Lyne at the age of 22 and with the daughter of Jane Eveline age 10 months.

Emigration (fam)

The 1900 United States census indicates that Hannah immigrated with James in 1880. This does not appear to be the case unless she returned to England and reentered a second time. The family folklore indicates that Hannah's daughter Jane Evelyn was unable to immigrate at the same time as her parents because she had the measles. (The is information from Alva Mae, Hannah's daughter.) If Hannah returned to England to bring her daughter Jane Evelyn there would be three trips across the Atlantic Ocean and a possibility of finding her in a passenger list. Jane's immigration date is 1883. Hannah was in the 1881 British census in Ashton- Under-Lyne living with her mother Ann Duffy, just next door to her grandfather John Duffy a widow working as a weaver of silk.
In the 1900 census, James Gould born was April 1834 in England, age 66 married 21 years, immigrated 1881, naturalized, farmer, rents farm; wife Hannah age 39, born October 1860, married 21 years, has had 8 children and 5 are living, born in England.
