Individual Details
BOAZ AMOS COREY
(11 May 1846 - 12 Jul 1919)
A note in the Genealogical Paper says, "Jarvis Corey and his brother Boaz Corey both built farms in Cherry Vale, one on each side of the road. Boaz's farm burned down and he then purchased the one built by Jarvis Corey. This farm was later owned by Frank Corey and in later years passed to Russell Corey. The farm and house was then purchased in 1969 by Cleveland L. Ryder and his son Dana C. Ryder of Maine, and is now known as "Hardship Acres."
In the 1861 census his name is given as "Amos B. Corey." In later census returns he is called "Boaz" or "Boaz A." His headstone in the New Canaan cemetery gives the name as "A. Boaz Corey."
He is not to be confused with the "Amos B. Corey" who also lived in New Canaan, and appears in the 1891 and 1901 census returns, married to Lydia J. (Corey). This latter Amos must be considered a stray.
E. Stone Wiggins speaks of the Canaan River "in front of Amos Corey's home" where iin 1875 a turtle was found with an inscription on its back, placed there in 1814.
The 1901 census for this family shows a "Vaughn B. Corey," his birth date given as 17 Jun 1891, aged 9. His relationship is given a grandson to Boaz. This child is thought to be Walker Corey's natural son.
The back of the Boaz Corey headstone records "Caroline E. Corey," 1889-1947. This is Caroline E. Green, wife of Boaz's son Frank. [Corey Book]
