Individual Details
JOHN CALVIN COREY
(9 Jan 1856 - 31 May 1928)
At the time of the 1891 census John Calvin was married to Louantha Briggs, and was farming at Temperance Vale, where he had resided since 1871. However, he is not there for the 1901 census, and Stanley Corey writes:
John m. (2) Mrs. Amelia M. Ebbett Clark, a widow of Samuel H. Clark, on 21 Nov 1900. She was born in 1857 in the Parish of Simonds, according to the marriage record. According to one source John C. Corey died on 3 May 1938, but there is a cemetery inscription in the Parish of Peel, Carleton County, which reads, "John Cory 1854-1926; wife Amelia Ebbett 1862-1928." When John C. Corey married for the second time in 1900, his residence was given as Temperance Vale, but it appears that he later moved to the Parish of Peel in Carleton County, and it is there that he is buried.
As he is not in the Temperance Vale census for 1901, he must have moved to Carleton County almost immediately following the marriage.
John's first wife's given name has presented some problems. The name in the marriage announcement is "Louisa." The census taker had trouble with the name and wrote, "Lou__tha." She herself spelled it "Lowantha" on vitual statistics, and she was familiarly known as "Lou."
