CHARLES SLOCUM COREY
(1814 - 1899)
He was named after his cousin, Charles Slocum, of Waterborough Parish New Brunswick, suggesting that he may have been born there. And it seems that Charles spent his early life there, and married there. His son, William Thomas, writing in 1903 stated that "my father learned the carpenter trade and followed it in New Brunswick and Ohio until his death."
Charles' life was stricken with tragedy in 1838, when his young wife of only 26 years of age, died, perhaps in complication from the birth of daughter Robina. In order to cope with his young family, Charles sent his son William and daughter Robina to Ontario, to live with grandfather Thomas in Bloomfield. Charles also later removed to Hallowell, where he remarried, and began a second family. But his stay in Ontario was brief. The birth place of his children gives us some indication of the time of his removal to Ohio. Sarah was born in Picton in 1843, and his son Charles Jr was born in Cleveland in 1847. So the move to Ohio was between 1843 and 1847.
The Ohio 1880 census shows the family of Charles Corey, living at 138 Cedar Ave, Cleveland. Charles declared that his parents and himself were born in England. His age is first written as 50, then overwritten as 60, though he was in fact about 66 at the time - it's very likely that Charles did not give the information. His wife Aldurah gave her age as 69, and declared that she was born in "MS," (presumably Massachusetts) and her parents in "Conn." Their son Charles and his wife "Plina" were living with them.
Charles lived out the last 52 years of his long life in Cleveland. He died there at the advanced age of 85.
