Elizabeth Juda Link

BIOGRAPHY: Elizabeth Ida Juda Link was born November 19, 1822, in Aug usta Coun ty, Virginia to William and Esther (Schindler) Link. She wa s confirmed as a m ember in the Salem Lutheran Church, December 8, 184 0. On December 31, 1848, she married Simon Stover, son of Daniel Stov er, in Augusta County. Simon was born September 28, 1822. This young c ouple were to become the grandparents of the Ei senhower brothers an d many other descendants who have contributed much to their neighborho ods and states. Daniel Stover, father of Simon, was chosen by Matth i as Link, Elizabeth's great-grandfather, as a witness to his will. Eliz abeth wa s baptized as Elizabeth Juda Link, according to the Salem Chu rch record; probab ly she was named for her grandmother Link. Later sh e changed her name to Elizab eth Ida. Her grandson, the general, was t o change his name, reversing the given parts from David Dwight to Dwi ght David. Elizabeth and Simon reared a family o f eight children o n a small farm in Augusta County, near Mount Sidney. All of t hese wer e sons, except Ida Elizabeth, the mother of the Eisenhowers. Elizabet h died at 45 on March 28, 1867, and Simon died December 11, 1873, afte r having ma rried again. Their children were all young, the oldest be ing only 24 and the y oungest 9 at their father's death. Their grandfa ther, William Link, was made th eir legal guardian and cared for the m until their maturity, when each received his share of their parents ' estate, which, although not a large amount, provide d education o r a start in life. The eldest son became a United Brethren ministe r . Another son, Worth Stover, became a schoolteacher and married his se cond cou sin, Laura Link. His young sister, Ida, was one of his pupils . Eventually, all moved to Kansas and Washington.
