Name Suffix:<NSFX> Jr. BIOGRAPHY: Blasius Graettinger was born o n March 31, 18 31, at Brunndoll, Griesbach, Bavaria, Germany. He cam e to Milwaukee, Wisconsin, in 1848, and on May 9, 1854, he married Ma gdalena Hasenberger. They moved to M enasha, Wisconsin, to escape a ch olera plague. They were the parents of three daughters: Magdalena, Ca rolyn, and Mary. Blasius's wife Magdalena died there a nd Blasius mov ed back to Milwaukee. Blasius then married Mary Mueller (Miller) o n May 18, 1863, at Elm Grove, Wisconsin. To this union five sons an d three d aughters were born: Joseph (1865), Blasius Richard (1868), M ichael (1870), John (1872), Kathrina (1874) later Mrs. Jim Mahon, Geo rge (1876), Elizabeth (1879) later Mrs. John Herberger, and Anna (1883 ) later Mrs. Tom Doyle. Anna was born at Graettinger, the rest wer e born at Elm Grove, Wisconsin. In 1880, his brot her, Dr. Alois Grae ttinger, convinced Blasius to move to Palo Alto County to be gin farmi ng. He reportedly was supposed to raise onions. The family first live d in a sod hut located just north of where the town is now. Later Bla sius and M ary built a log cabin and Blasius supplemented the family' s livelihood by hunti ng small game. Blasius eventually purchased 7 0 acres (1889) where Ralph Graett inger now lives, but he was not muc h interested in farming, leaving it to his s ons. His work as a stone mason can be observed in the foundations of many barns and building s in the vicinity. Blasius Graettinger died at his home on April 6, 1 900. He is buried at St. Jacob's Cemetery northwest of town.
