Pauline Theresa Nathe
(August 9, 1872 - February 14, 1936)
Paulina Therese Nathe Meyer
Paulina was the 7th child and 2nd daughter born to Caspar and Gertrude (Serfas) Nathe, in Meire Grove. She was only 15 years and 10 months old when her mother died. Church records indicate that she died of dropsy, but the court house records indicate she died of heart failure. Paulina married Herman H. Meyer September 8, 1891, at 19 years old while he was almost 23.
There was no shortage of hard work for the young bride. She was the only woman cleaning and cooking for Uncle Herman, husband Herman, and others in-laws who stayed to help with the farming. The spring and summer demanded full days of work, Field work, of course, but cooking, cleaning, tilling and planting huge vegetable and flower gardens, and daily duties were the top priority chores. Also, if there were children to watch or care for, that of course, had to be done by her. Autumn brought harvest time, canning in the summer garden, apple picking and storage, in addition to the daily chores.
Paulina loved babies. The fact that she bore 14 children was proof of that. The people who remember her say she showed her new babies proudly to friends and neighbors. She was soft spoken and gentle mannered. If there was a gathering at night of friends, she would allow the younger children to sit behind the stove and observe the happenings and then slip them something to eat when lunch was served. The children had to stay out of sight of their dad or he would send them to bed.
She was also a happy, fun loving person who was not above a good time with friends and family. "Her warm smile filled the room" someone told me years ago when I first started asking about her.
Her daughters and daughter-in-laws have said the she was a prayerful woman. Friends, relatives, and neighbors would come to her for prayers in stressful times. She was especially fond of the rosary.
In her last year she cared for her sick husband, Herman. After his death she developed a sore on her leg that wouldn't heal. When the doctors realized she had diabetes, they gave her insulin. However, she went into insulin shock, which was brought on a heart attack. She died on Feb. 14, 1936, almost four months after her husband.
