Norbert Casper Nathe
(July 12, 1909 - August 9, 1968)
Norbert C Nathe was born July 12, 1909, the 11th of the 14 children of Herman and Katherine (Ortmann) Nathe. He was raised on the Nathe family farm south of Meire Grove and east of Greenwald, Stearns County, Minnesota. Norbert's mother, Katherine (Ortmann) Nathe, died unexpectedly in July 1921 when Norb was 12 years old. His father, Herman Nathe, died two years later in November 1923 when Norb was 14 years old. Norb remained on the Nathe farm for several years afterwards to help his brothers & sisters run the farm.
On April 16, 1940; when Norbert Casper Nathe was 30 years old, he married Agnes Kuhlmann. Agnes was born on April 9, 1912 on the Kuhlmann family farm- 2 miles north of Melrose, Minn to Joseph & Mary (Miller) Kuhlmann.
The couple farmed 2 miles northeast of Melrose, previously owned by Agnes parents and originally setteled by her paternal grandparents - Bernard and Marie Kuhlmann. (Section 23 of Melrose township) There were no children born to Norbert & Agnes Nathe. At the age of 52 years, Agnes died on December 3, 1964 in Melrose, Minn.
Norbert Nathe had been a widower for 3 1/2 years when, on July 6, 1968, at 58 years old, he married his 2nd wife, Thresa B. Wessel, at St. Mary's Church in Melrose, Minn. Thresa Wessel had been widowed for 8 years before she married Norb Nathe.
Prior Norb & Thresa Nathe's wedding in 1968, the Nathe family was in continued sadness due to loss of numerious family members. The following occurred in the Nathe family prior to Norb's marriage to Thresa Wessel Nathe.
A year after Agnes Nathe died, December 1, 1965, Norbert's brother Hubert J Nathe died at the age of 76 years old.
Norb's younger brother, Michael H. Nathe, died June 11, 1967 in Milwaukee, Wisc from a heart attack at the age of 55 years. He and his family were returning to Montana after attending the graduation of his son, Lt Michael L Nathe, at West Point Academy.
In December 1967, just five months after Mike Nathe's death, Norb's other brother, Edward Nathe, died in Greenwald, Minn at the age of 64 years. Ed and his wife Amanda had farmed on the Nathe ancestorial homeplace near Greenwald. Today the homestead is owned by Ed's son, James "Jimmy" Nathe.
Eight months after Ed Nathe's death, on August 9, 1968, Norbert C. Nathe died in Melrose, Minn at the age of 59 years. He and Thresa (Wessel) Nathe had been married just 35 days. Norbert is buried next to his first wife, Agnes (Kuhlmann) Nathe, in St. Mary's Cemetery in Melrose, Minn.
Twenty days later, on August 29, 1968, Norb's nephew and son of Michael H. Nathe, 1st Lt Micahel L. Nathe, was killed in action from mortar fire while serving in Hua Nghia, South Vietnam.
