Services will be 3 p.m. Friday at St. John's Abbey Church for the Rev. Benjamin Stein, OSB, 90, who died Monday at the abbey's retirement center. Burial will be in the abbey cemetery. Friends may call after 7 tonight at the abbey church in Collegeville.
The Rev. Benjamin Stein, OSB, was born in Cold Spring to Frederic and Barbara (Muggli) Stein. He graduated from St. John's University and seminary. He made his original commitment to the Benedictine way of life at St. John's Abbey on July 11, 1930. He was ordained a priest on June 6, 1936. He was a librarian for St. John's University for more than 50 years, serving as head librarian from 1939 to 1967. He was the chair of the committee that advised in the design of the Alcuin Library. He was honored in 1997 by having a conference room in the library named after him. He also did pastoral work at St. Anselm's Church in Bronx, N.Y., and served as librarian of St. Bernard's Abbey in Cullman, Ala. He was the director of Benedictine Brothers at the abbey from 1942 to 1946. He gave weekend pastoral assistance at more than 120 parishes in the St. Cloud Diocese. Following his retirement from library work in 1981, he volunteered to begin a new ministry at St. Augustine's Monastery in Nassau, Bahamas, where he served as guest master, librarian, archivist, and weekend pastoral helper at various Bahamian parishes until his retirement at St. John's in 1990.
Survivors include his sisters and brothers, Agnes Bell, Philomene DiGiacomo, Julia, Frederick 'Fritz'and Joseph of Cold Spring. He also leaves behind his Benedictine community. He was preceded in death by six brothers and one sister.
