Services will be 10:30 a.m. Thursday, Aug. 8th at St. Mary's Catholic Church in Melrose for Alvina M. Barthel who died Monday at the St. Cloud Hospital from injuries received in a car accident. Interment will follow in the parish cemetery. Friends may call Wednesday from 5 - 9 p.m. and Thursday from 8 - 10 a.m. at the Patton-Schad Funeral Home in Melrose. Parish prayers will be at 8 p.m. Wednesday at the funeral home.
Alvina Barthel was born on August 10, 1917 in Roscoe, Minnesota to Joseph and Margaret (Buchholz) Kunstleben. She married John A. Barthel on May 1, 1934 in St. Martin. She was employed by Farmers Produce in Melrose, which is now known as Jennie-O-Foods. They farmed in Ward Springs and later moved to Melrose where she worked at Jennie-O-Foods until retiring in 1979.Alvina enjoyed handcrafting, playing cards and gardening. She was a member of St. Mary's Catholic Church in Melrose.
Survivors include her children, Eldred Barthel (Clarissa) of Grey Eagle and Dorothy Ferrian of Minneapolis; 4 grandchildren, 13 great-grandchildren and 4 great-great-grandchildren; sisters, Veronica Kamphake and Monica Olmscheid of Sauk Rapids, Bertha Haskamp of Melrose, Matilda Moonen of Albany and Theresa Ertl (Norbert) of Holdingford.
She was preceded in death by her parents; husband, John A. Barthel on Nov. 18, 1986; brother and sisters, Henry Kunstleben, Rose Wensman and Martha Kunstleben; son-in-law, Edward F. Ferrian; 2 grandchildren and 2 great-grandchildren.
