Services will be 10 a.m. Monday at St. John's Catholic Church for Gilbert Marthaler, 86, who died Thursday at Pine Villa Care Center, Melrose. Burial will be in the parish cemetery. Friends may call from 3:30 to 9 p.m. Sunday and from 8 to 9:30 a.m. Monday at Patton-Schad Funeral Home, Melrose. St. Joseph's Society, the Poor Souls' Society and the Holy Rosary Society will pray at 7:30 p.m. Sunday at the funeral home, followed by parish prayers at 8.
Gilbert Marthaler was born in Grove Township, Stearns County, to Simon and Rose (Schwegman) Marthaler. He was born and raised on the family farm, which he worked until his retirement in 1977. He married Marie Schneider on Sept. 10, 1946, at St. John's Catholic Church, Meire Grove. The couple moved to Meire Grove in 1979, but he continued to help out at the farm. He was a member of St. John's Catholic Church, St. Joseph's Society, Holy Rosary Society and Poor Souls Society. He was a former director of the Meire Grove Athletic Club, a church trustee for four years and was a Third Degree Knight with the Melrose Knights of Columbus.
Survivors include his wife; children, Allen of St. Joseph, Gary of Meire Grove, Jan Schaefer of Melrose, and Annette Gruber of Belgrade; brother and sisters, Lawrence of Sauk Centre, Mayme Imdieke of Greenwald, Lydia Schulzetenberg of Melrose, and Edwina Meyer of Albany; and nine grandchildren.
He was preceded in death by his brothers, John, Albert, Alois and Ervin.
