Mass of Christian Burial will be 11 a.m. on Saturday, October 4, 2008 at St. Martin Catholic Church in St. Martin for Leo C. Spanier, age 97, of Cold Spring and formerly of St. Martin, who passed away Sunday, September 28 at the Assumption Home in Cold Spring. Burial will take place in the St. Martin Parish Cemetery. Relatives and friends may call from 4-9 p.m. on Friday and after 9:30 a.m. on Saturday at the St. Martin Parish Hall. Parish Prayers will be at 8 p.m. on Friday followed by a rosary by the St. Louis Knights of Columbus Council 3820, St. Martin Catholic Aid Association, St. Martin Lions Club and St. Joseph’s Men’s Society at 8:30 p.m.

Leo was born September 4, 1911 in St. Martin, MN to Christopher and Susan (Mehr) Spanier. He married Marie Bauer on October 6, 1937 at St. Michael’s Catholic Church in Spring Hill. They farmed in Roscoe until 1960 when they moved to St. Martin where they continued farming. They moved to Assumption Court in 2000. Leo was proud of the fact that at age 20 he was trusted to haul cattle from St. Martin to South St. Paul for Al Doll Trucking. He enjoyed playing baseball for St. Martin and Roscoe. He was a big fan of the Minnesota Twins and St. Martin Martins. His greatest joy was dancing with his favorite partner Marie.

Leo is survived by his children Ruby (Andy) Anderson of Bemidji, Denis (Kathy) of Mesa, AZ, Ann (Ralph) Schramel of Richmond, Linda Spanier of El Sobrante, CA, Chris (Peggy) of Paynesville and Leon (Julie) of Santa Rosa, CA, 19 grandchildren, 18 great grandchildren, one great great grandson, and brothers Nic Spanier and Joseph (Juletta) Spanier.

Preceding him in death were his parents, wife Marie (2004), brothers John, Math, Jacob, Mike, Al, and sisters Hilda Stang, Veronica Lenzmeier, and Marie Lauer. In lieu of acknowledgements, Leo’s family will make a donation to Fr. Thomas Kannenpalli’s Parish in Kerala, India.
