Mass of Christian Burial will be 11 AM on Tuesday, August 31, 2004 at St. Martin Catholic Church in St. Martin for Marie J. Spanier, age 90, of Cold Spring and formerly of St. Martin, who died Friday at the Assumption Home in Cold Spring. Burial will take place in the parish cemetery. Friends may call from 4-9 PM on Monday and after 9:30 AM on Tuesday at St. Martin Parish Hall. The Daughters of Isabella along with the St. Martin Christian Women, Our Lady of Fatima Mission Group and St. Therese Mission Group will pray at 7 PM, followed by parish prayers at 8 PM.
Marie was born on July 16, 1914 in Spring Hill, Minnesota to Frank and Gertrude (Jacobs) Bauer. She married Leo Spanier on October 6, 1937 at St. Michael's Catholic Church in Spring Hill. They farmed in Roscoe until 1960 when they moved to St. Martin. They moved to Assumption Court in Cold Spring in 2000. Marie loved cooking, baking, and sewing. In her later years she enjoyed crocheting, knitting, playing cards, and bingo. Her greatest joy was dancing with Leo.
Marie is survived by her husband Leo of Cold Spring; her children, Ruby (Andy) Anderson of Bemidji, Denis (Kathy) of Meza, AZ, Ann (Ralph) Schramel of Richmond, Linda Spanier of Pacifica, CA, Chris (Peggy) of Paynesville, and Leon (Julie) of Santa Rosa, CA; 19 grandchildren; 12 great grandchildren; and sisters-in-law, Tillie Bauer, and Marie Bauer.
She was preceded in death by her parents; sisters, Hilda Kalthoff, and Theresa Olmscheid; brothers, Leo, Ben, Mike, Joe, Al, and Leander Bauer. In lieu of acknowledgments, Marie's family will make a donation to Father Thomas Kennimpallil's Parish in Kerala, India.
