Mass of Christian Burial will be 10:30 a.m. on Monday, July 13, 2009 at St. Louis Catholic Church in Paynesville, for George R. Kortan, age 91, of Paynesville, formerly of Sauk Centre, who passed away peacefully at home on July 10, 2009 surrounded by family and friends. Reverend Richard Leisen and Reverend Glenn Krystosek will officiate. Burial will take place in Calvary Cemetery in Sauk Centre. Relatives and friends may call from 3-8 p.m. on Sunday and after 9:30 a.m. on Monday at the St. Louis Catholic Church in Paynesville. Parish prayers will be held at 7:30 p.m. on Sunday at the church.
George was born December 3, 1917 in Sauk Centre, MN to Charles and Mary (Novak) Kortan. He married Winnifred Olson on July 2, 1946 at Our Lady of Angels Catholic Church in Sauk Centre. She passed away February 1, 1990. He married Rose M. Evesla ge on June 18, 1993 at St. Louis Catholic Church in Paynesville. He worked for Kane Transport in Sauk Centre from 1954 until 1984 when he retired. He enjoyed his family, flower gardening, but his passion was for driving truck. He was a member of St. Louis Catholic Church.
George is survived by his wife Rose of Paynesville, children Andrea (Dave) Smilonich of Detroit Lakes, Arletta Kortan of Brainerd, Darrell (Joyce) Kortan of Brooklyn Park, Anita Sharp of Rochester and Annette (Gregg) Shane of St. Bonifacius, step children Tom (Linda) Eveslage of Paynesville and Cindy (Tom) Blank of Foley, grandchildren Tenielle (Steve) Shallman, Cristin (Justin) Betzold, Jocelyn Kortan, Brandon (Lisa) Smilonich and Ariel Shane, step grandchildren Tina (Brent) Mages, Kim Eveslage, Sara Warmbier and Derek Warmbier, great grandchildren Ava Shallman, Payton, Olivia and Bree Louise Mages, sister Helen Norgarden of Sauk Centre and brother Richard (Joan) Kortan of Sauk Centre.
Preceding him in death were his parents, wife Winnifred, brothers James, Frank, Steve, William and Charles and sisters Mathilda Dusek and Evelyn DuPree. Pallbearers will be Louis Kortan, Mike Kane, Harold Halverson, Tom Eveslage, Paul Kortan and John Weimerskirch. Crossbearer will be Brandon Smilonich.
