Mass of Christian Burial will be at 10 AM on Wednesday, November 28, 2007 at the St. Cloud Veterans Administration Medical Center Chapel for George A. Backes who died on Sunday. Friends may call on Tuesday, November 27 from 4-7 PM at the Williams Funeral Home, St. Cloud, MN. Parish prayers will be at 5 PM. Rev. Alfred Stangl will officiate. Inurnment will be in the Minnesota State Veterans Cemetery, Little Falls, MN.
George was born July 11, 1924 in Farming, MN to the late Albert and Elizabeth (Egerman) Backes. He married Gloria on November 13, 1948. He served in the US Navy from 1945 to 1947. George was a bricklayer by trade, working mostly in the St. Cloud area. From 1974 until his retirement in 1986, he was the business representative for the Bricklayers Union. George's favorite pastimes were hunting, fishing and playing cribbage. He was a member of VFW Post 428 and Bricklayers Union Local 1, Chapter 4.
Survivors include his wife, Gloria; daughter, Joyce Butcher, Hudson, WI; sons, Jerry, Clear Lake, MN; Mark and Daniel, Fairbanks, Alaska; David and Joe, St. Cloud, MN; 17 grandchildren and four great-grandchildren; brothers and sisters, Ester, Florence, Irene, Rosalie, Joan, Eugene and James.
George was preceded in death by parents and Sisters Mildred, Imelda, Marie and Brother Carl. Memorials are preferred to donor's choice. No flowers please
