Madeline Govreau Beaumont, author of San Antonio, Florida, 1881-1981, tells a story about John Flanagan, ``real estate man, active as early as 1884`` who built a fine home on Main Street in San Antonio.
He was accustomed to city street lights so he installed a kerosene street light in front of his home. On Saturday night, young men from outlying areas would gallop their horses down Main Street to see who could shoot out Flanagan's fancy street light.
Flanagan must have had great patience, because he simply replaced the broken globe each time.
