Apparently an employee on a New Orleans to Cincinnati packet line, John wrote a letter from Cincinnati, Ohio, to a friend, Charles Stokes, of Rancocus, Burlington County, New Jersey, mentioning a trip on the steamer Duke of Orleans, the severe winter in New Orleans, the bustling activity at the Cincinnati wharves, and passenger accommodations on steamboats operating on the Mississippi River.
