Birth
William's father, Fenimore, died in 1823 when William was about a year and a half old. On May 5, 1825, Paul F. and Rebecca Wilmerton (William's grandparents) were appointed guardians of their son Fenimore's five children, Richard, Griffith, John, Rachel, and William, all under 14 years of age. When Paul and Rebecca died in 1829, William went to live with the Charles Stokes family, where he remained until adulthood. In 1842, at the age of twenty, he moved to Preemption, Illinois.Death
He was a believer in Christian Science. Funeral services were held at the Davenport Christian Science Chapel. He was cremated at the Davenport, Iowa crematorium.Illness
On 12 June 1906, Wilmerton was declared insane and Thomas J. Medill was appointed conservator of his estate.Endnotes
