Richard Smith

(1849 - 31 Mar 1889)

Richard and Elizabeth Smith migrated to Australia, sailing from Plymouth , in the Surrey, a ship which carried 325 passengers comprised of 40 marr ied couples, 97 single males and 75 females, 32males and 26 females age d 1-12, and those under 1, 9-1 males and 6+1 females.
The ship arrived in Sydney on the 24th July, 1875, where it was placed i n quarantine during which time it is recorded that Richard Smith complai ned of "no milk during detention in quarantine", no doubt required for m y grandmother who would then have been 13 months old. It is also recorde d that they were both Wesleyans, that they could both read but only Eliza beth could write and that Richard's parents were still living at the tim e but that Elizabeth's were deceased.I

They settled in Minmi where Richard kept a shop and also served as the lo cal undertaker although the ship's records state his occupation as bein g that of a miner. Richard died in 1889, aged 39, from phothisis but prio r to his death, a woman who owed money to the shop taught my grandmothe r to use a sewing machine in order to repay her debt.

Elizabeth died in 1905, aged 58, from diabetes and both are buried near t he entrance in Minmi cemetery.
