Samuel Alexander

(1657 - 14 Jun 1733)

Samuel (one of the "infamous nine") that supposedly immigrated from Derry, Ireland to the Colony of Maryland in 1670. There is much speculation as to his parents, but all suggestions have been disproven. Furthermore, DNA testing has proven that the nine are not necessarily related. His family settled first in Somerset County on the Pocomoke River. He is known to have been in Somerset County in 1698 from an old will, abstracted that said, "On lands in Somerset County, Maryland where Samuel and Andrew Alexander once lived". In 1714, 200 acres of land known as Sligo was patented to him. He also had tracts known as "Alexandria", "Knowlwood", "Hispaniola" and Bullen's Range. These plantations were near the mouth of the present Cheaspeake and Delaware Canal, adjoining the Charles Camp Plantation of John and Jean Brevard, and only a short distance from the Maryland and Delaware line. He moved his family to Cecil County in 1723 where he became a large land owner and an Elder of the Broad Creek Presbyterian Congregation of Cecil County. He purchased land for the Presbyterian Church in Bohemia. He lived in the area called Bohemia Manor of Cecil County, and not in New Munster. Samuel is buried in the Bethel (Cheaspeake City) Cemetery. Samuel executed his will on 29 March 1727, and it was probated on 18 June 1733,
